God has smiled on me!

It's been a while since I posted my last blog. Although the new year started beautiful with all the snow and ice, Tim and I hit a rough patch in our relationship. The circumstances made me feel like I was sinking away in driftsand. What had seemed solid ground was now shifting. The beautiful thing about sinking deep is that God not only pulls you out, He also uses it to build a stronger foundation. That is what we've experienced. Though there was a lot of pain, God used our tears to bring us closer together and purify our lives.

Aside from our personal situation our housing situation became more and more of a burden to us. Don't get me wrong, we had a great space and decorated it just how we liked it. But the building where we lived is very old and had very poor insulation. As a result we listened in on the lives of our neighbors. Our drunk neighbor upstairs took a shine to loud music, so did the African family upstairs, the collegestudents next door loved late night drinkingsocials, our neighbor on the other side shared her very intimate nighttime hobbies with us... We spend our first Christmas as a married couple trembling in our seats because some neighbors wanted to listen to very very loud salsa music from 9 am till 11 pm! Each night we'd wake up two to three times because of neighbor activity.

Slowly but surely all this wore us down. I found myself looking for excuses to stay at work longer and longer, just so I wouldn't have to go home. My heart was crying each night "God please give us a new home!" I knew it wouldn't take away our personal issues, but I so longed for a place to rest, to feel safe.

One day, as I felt so desperate to move, we received a letter. The letter invited us to a houseviewing the next week. We had forgotten all about having signed up for that house since we'd ended up 7th on the list. However, people had changed their minds or not shown up. Hence the second house viewing and we were invited. Not only that, we were now 3rd on the list!

We had quite the wishlist concerning our new house. We wanted the kitchen and bathroom to be nice, not to much work on the house, and we wanted to really like the neighborhood. Besides, the house was in a neighboring town, so we'd have to like the town aswell. Ofcource we realized that if the house really was all that, numbers 1 and 2 would be crazy not to take it!

Anyhow, we went to see it and scout out the town. We fell in love even before seeing the inside. The house was situated at the end of a row of houses, and looked out on a green zone separating one neighborhood from the other. The town had a village-like air to it but with all the conveniences of a city. Our hearts were racing when we went to look at the actual house.

Inside we were joined by three other couples and several others arrived later... we had seen the house and loved it... kitchen and bathroom renovated only one year earlier, new heating system and large windows with double glass, three bedrooms, a huge attic for storage... we were sold. But we were third on the list.... so we held our breath as we waited for numbers 1 and 2 to arrive. After 20 minutes numbers 1 and 2 had still not shown up and the rent-agent moved forward to check our paperwork, another 10 minutes later we were the new owners of the house!

Looking back there have been so many 'coincidences' that we can only sit back in wonder, how awesome is our God! The only time we had to work on the house was the very week we viewed the house and received the key since that week we had holidays. Financially we would have earned too much salary to be allowed to rent this house had it happened two weeks later. And it has been the best medicine to my frayed nerves and exhaustion. It has also provided Tim and I with a project to work on together and that really helped us move along in our relationship.

It's been two months since we received the keys. Spring has come and so has our first year anniversary. Although we had lost eachother for a while along the way, this first year has been a beautiful. Not only that, it has been a tremendous blessing to experience first hand that a marriage doesn't just naturally takes shape after a wedding, but it takes work, patience, determination and lots of love from above. I have always known there would be stuggles and I dreaded that. Now I don't only know in my mind but also by experience that God is greater, that Tim loves me in everything, and that the three of us are committed to eachother for a lifetime.

God truely has smiled on us!

Christmas in Holland

Hi all,
as most of you know I experienced my very first Christmas in the Netherlands since I was 12... And quite the experience it was! We had a snowy white Christmas for the first time since 1981! It didn't get me ecstatic since I didn't know any better, but Tim and the rest of Holland was thrilled!

The week leading up to Christmas wasn't very fun for me, as I became sick with an infection in my abdomen. Thankfully I was able to go outside for a bit each day, so I got my fair share of snowfun and shopping done. And as Christmas came closer my tummy got better and though my appetite is still small I was able to enjoy some of the Christmas dinner Tim cooked.

Speaking of Tim, he really went all out to make this a beautiful Christmas! A week before Christmas he took me shopping for a tiny Christmas tree and some decorations. He also gave me the Top100 Christmas Hits of all time. And the day before Christmas he took me Christmas tree shopping again (discount days ;) ), but this time a full size Christmas tree. Due to the fact that my brother-in-law and his family of four were staying with us the day after Christmas we had to refrain from putting our big tree up. So we put it straight in the storage room... but next year!

It was very strange to be in a Dutch church on Christmas Eve and not be at the Candle Light service back home. Very strange... but for some reason they sang some English carols that most of the people in church, including those on stage, didn't know very well, but I bellowed them out at the top of my voice. That was great. Tim had to film the service for those who couldn't be there. So beforehand I had dreaded sitting alone. But God winked at me and send a good old friend of mine to church. He hadn't been to church since our wedding, and hadn't planned to go on Christmas eve. But there he was. And I thank God for giving me family for those two hours. It was different from what I am used to... but I guess different is okay.

During these days I've very much wanted to go hug my mom and dad. But I'll just send them my love and hug them big time when they come visit us in the summer. This Christmas Tim and I have started our own little traditions. That meant we had to let go of those special things our parents did to make Christmas unique before. And letting go is hard. I'm not a big fan of letting go... but here we are... and it really isn't that hard with Tim at my side. Coz he has this way of making me so happy!

How was your Christmas?

Sinterklaas is leaving town

Well... almost... Tomorrow, December 5th, most families celebrate present-night and that's the end of the Sinterklaas time. Today we had our Sinterklaas party at school. The kids had a blast and we really enjoyed having Sint and his BlackPeters visit our classroom. And with pride I can announce to you that my beautifull kids managed to make ZielePete (SadPete) smile, sing and dance! They were so excited :)

After Sint left we enjoyed our treats and drinks and sang some more songs. We ended with dancing to Coole Pete Diego: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNoakDYExaE , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGEYCaLtUs0&feature=related and some of my kids rock the dancefloor! Its so much fun to watch! Even with a throbbing headache and what felt like a fever I couldn't stop myself from joining them.

That excitement had been building up over the past three weeks and made this particular week a challenge for their teacher. I guess by adjusting your expectations it's totally do-able and crazy fun. But I must say I am so glad this week is over. I am ready for a vacation.

However, Christmas is right around the corner. So this afternoon all the Sinterklaas decorations came down and this weekend the school will be re-decorated for Christmas. We go for Christmas fullforce for two weeks and then... ahhh Christmas break!

Tim will have his last day of his internship this Monday and the company he worked at seems impressed with his work. They are considering offering him a part-time job. It is a little unlikely since there a fewer job-openings due to the economic climate. But we'll see. It would be great if Tim gets the chance to continue his project, to finish entering data and fine-tuning his webpages. Insheallah :) We'll see.

Kitten is doing well, earlier today she conquered a bag of chips and took off with it. It was a hilarious sight, since the bag was as big as she is :D My kids at school love hearing about Kitten's adventures and beg for them each day!

All is well in the Kiefte household, all the furniture has found a new place in the livingroom, and is now all set for a cold but cozy winter. Bring it on!

about reportcards and parent-teacher conferences

Ah... weekend... So very very welcome this week...
It's been a week of long days at work and loud kids. Sinterklaas has arrived in the Netherlands and drives the little ones crazy with excitement. A very fun month this is...

However, the arrival of Sinterklaas goes hand in hand with the final week of writing reportcards and preparing for the parent-teacher conferences which will take place this coming Monday and Tuesday evening.

I'm exhausted as it is, have had some close brushes with getting sick, and am not looking forward to the coming week. It'll be rough going...

Many of my KG-class have gotten sick with the flu, whether this is swineflu or not is often undetermined. They are mostly sick for a full week before coming back to school. Only one of them spend a night in the hospital, the others were fine at home. So far the flu has been kind to us.

But I will not let it ruin my mood, coz in only a few days this will all be over and only the fun of the season remains! I already decorated the house with Christmas lights, as it gets dark around 16:30 these days. And I really like the ricelights I bought in Egypt two years ago.

Kitten spends her days alternating between insane playfulness and rowdiness and sleeping like the cutest thing on our laps. She's growing nicely and manages to climb up to 4 feet into the curtains. Last night she managed to open the bathroomdoor and had a ball playing with the water in the watercloset... ewww! All the walls were splattered! yuck yuck...

All is well in the land of Tim and Ineke :)

New layout

It's time to breathe new life into my blog. My sweet hubby Tim is helping me create a new layout and it's going to look really sweet. After that is done it'll be up to me to be a little more faithful and post some of my little adventures that happen daily in my life.

Still teaching kindergarten bring me some very humorous situations. The kids are very honest and tell hilarious stories. Lately it's been raining a lot so instead of playing outside for a while I'd dance with the class. That's just so funny!

This month is a very very busy one for all the teachers in Holland, possibly worldwide... We've been spending a lot of time observing and testing the kids individually. That, with 27 more KG-kids around you, is quite a challenge. However, the observing and testing is done now. Reports are waiting to be written, followed by parent-teacher conferences.

By the end of November it should all be done and we'll celebrate that as a team by going out to a High Wine dinner :)

The kids are not bothered by all the administrative work I have to do. Sinterklaas arrived in Holland today. That and the fact that the weather was stormy all week made the kids so loud and twitchy they almost lifted the roof off!

However, it's weekend now and all that we have planned is a family outing with the Van Leeuwen grandparents and a visit with the Van den Berg grandparents. The rest of our freetime will be spend in our pj's watching the speedskating competition and restyling my blog. Ah, it's a wonderful life!

ps. can you believe we've been married for 6 months already?!
